The undemocratic actions of the right-wing government in Poland and the election of controversial ex-politicians of the ruling party as new judges of the Constitutional Court have resulted in the possibility of challenging the 1993 law on the abortion compromise. Poland’s abortion laws were already among the strictest in Europe but the Constitutional Tribunal’s ruling will mean an almost total ban.
This provoked hundreds of thousands of Polish women to take to the streets, not only in large cities, but also in towns and villages. These are the biggest protests since the overthrow of communism in Poland. The photograph shows a man who is stuck in his car between the protesting women and the police cordon.
